Ponstel (Mefenamic Acid) is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis. It is also used to treat menstrual pain.
Crystalline powder grayish-white color. Practically insoluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol. Has structural similarity with salicylic acid and its derivatives. Has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect.
As antiinflammatory activity of salicylates. On analgesic efficacy equivalent butadionu and prevails over the salicylates, and antipyretic is equal to these drugs.
Mechanism of action similar to other NSAIDs. By the ability to inhibit the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is intermediate between butadionom and indomethacin.
Rapidly and completely absorbed, C max is 2-4 h, T1/2 — 3 hours; excreted by the kidneys mostly unchanged.
Used for rheumatism, infectious nonspecific polyarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, arthralgia and muscular pain, neuralgia, with headache and toothache and in various fevers.
Assign inside (after eating) adults 0.25—0.5 g 3-4 times a day. If necessary and good endurance daily dose increased to a maximum of 3 g, and after reaching the therapeutic effect is reduced to 1 g. Children aged 5 to 10 years appoint 0.25 g, over 10 years — 0.3 g 3-4 times a day.
The duration of treatment depends on the characteristics of the disease and tolerability; the course continues, generally 20-45 days (if necessary up to 2 months).
Ponstel side effects.
Mefenamova acid is generally well tolerated (sometimes it is prescribed when poor tolerability of salicylates), but it can cause nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, gastrointestinal bleeding. To prevent these phenomena it is taken after meals. It is recommended to drink milk tablets. In some cases, possible allergic phenomena (skin itch, rash), drowsiness, disturbance of vision, with long — term use of hemolytic anemia and impaired hematopoiesis.
The drug is contraindicated in gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer and inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases. Care must be taken when assigning mefenamova acid in diseases of the blood-forming organs and kidneys. Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Salicylates dipyrone and enhance the anti-inflammatory effect of methenamine acid.
